Biodiversity relies on maintaining an interdependent balance of organisms within systems.
Key Concepts:
Form
What is it like? |
Function
How does it work? |
Responsibility
What is our responsibility? |
Our Key Questions:
How do we classify living organisms?
What are sustainable practices we can adopt to help support biodiversity?
Why is diversity crucial for the sustainability of our planet?
Inquiry
During this unit we want you to start with a question. What are you curious about regarding nature around you? Let that fuel your research, let that be what drives you in your search for an answer. Along the way you will learn many things you never would've imagined. That's how inquiry works though; you continuously learn by asking questions.

Week 1
Students had a busy first week back to school! They've chosen two animals for our research projects, learned about classifying animals and participated in a waste audit. What a productive week!
Ask your child what they learned about classifying animals and what each of their animals are for their project. You can also inquire into how their waste audit went. Many were surprised with their results.

Where Does our Waste Go?
Here are the videos we watched some parts of this week. Feel free to watch the rest of the videos to find more information.
Most people don't think about where their trash goes. Hopefully this lesson will make you think twice about what you consume, where the package goes and how long it will stay with us on this planet.

Week 2
Students in 5S completed a waste audit. We detailed all the waste we had for three days, noted the material it is made from and whether it was recyclable or not. The students then reflected on the items that they used the most and made a commitment to give up one item that was not recyclable. It was a fascinating exercise for them to see what waste they consume and what actually ends up in the landfill.
Other topics we discussed were:
*Refusing, reusing and reducing (instead of the old reduce, reuse, recycle phrase)
*Geography-7 continents and 5 oceans (locations on a map)
*How their animals move, migrate and survive in the wild

Zero Waste Bali's owner, Silvija Rumiha, and her intern, Nelli Nuorva, made a visit to Year 5 on Wednesday. They discussed various topics including the importance of reducing plastic consumption, easy low waste swaps and ended with some tasty treats made from ingredients from their bulk food items in the store. The students engaged in the discussion in connection with their inquiry into how biodiversity relies on maintaining a balance of systems in nature. They've each committed to changing one behavior they have that contributes to the plastic problem here in Bali. More information about Zero Waste Bali can be found at https://zerowastebali.com.
Year 5 students grouped themselves according to their passion projects. They've committed to helping reduce plastic waste in many different ways. They brainstormed how to take action within the next couple weeks. Solutions were varied and creative. A few students wanted to visit shops to convince them to stop carrying plastic bags, while others focused on plastic cups at Starbucks. A few want to visit a local school in hopes to give a presentation on the importance of using reusable water bottles instead of plastic bottles, and yet another group has plans to do weekly beach cleanups. One group is planning on tackling the issue at CCS of people mismanaging recyclables. All these are fine examples of how each of us can have an impact at helping to reduce plastic in our area.
Gotong Royong Presentation by Isha
Isha, from 5S, heard about weekly beach cleanups that happen on Fridays at 7am and 5pm at Finn's Beach Club. She and Annabelle made their own sign to advertise the beach cleanup and Isha gave a presentation during our Gotong Royong period to promote it within Year 5. We will meet at the steps to the beach near Finn's Beach Club next Friday, February 1st at 5pm to participate.

Composting Lesson with Pak Tom in Cantina
The students have been studying food chains and webs. To see how all things are eventually broken down into the soil again, we took a trip over to see the awesome compost that Pak Tom and the gardeners have maintained near Cantina. They learned valuable information that we will use next week in our own composting experiments.
Week 7
Students have been hard at work on their rainforest within the classrooms.
They will be making the rainforest interactive for you during their Student Led Conferences, detailing the plants and animal they created and why biodiversity within the rainforest is crucial.
